5 Reasons Children Need Discipline

As a father, teacher, coach and mentor of young folks, I see one downfall that is getting in the way of their adult lifes once they graduate school. That one thing is discipline or a lack of. Over the last 20 years schools have changed, kids have changed and society has softened it overall stance on how a child should be disciplined. Some people beleive the old way of giving them a good butt whooping every now and then. Before someone gets all upset let me clarify. I am not talking about old school hickory switches or belts. I am talking about a good pop on the tail to let them know what they are doing is not acceptable.

Others beleive in counting to three and putting kids in timeout. I personally am more old school and think timeout has created unmanageble people because they did not learn a lesson from mom or dad saying “1, 2, 3, I am warning you little bobby”. When I grew up if my mom or dad got past one it was on and somebody was getting their tail tore up and feelings adjusted. Finding a way to discipline your child is key to their success and the familiy success. Who hasn’t been in a store and saw some brat kid showing out and the parents just sit there and apologize. People who have no say also are getting involved. It is amazing the softness that has become prevelant in our society and now we are seeing the results.

Teenagers and young adults that refuse to listen, work, behave or follow the laws. They were allowed to do as they wanted growing up because mom and dad wanted to be best friends instead of parents. Then they grow up have kids and repeat the process. My advice is do not let some crazy person without kids try to tel you how to raise yours. I have raised three of my own and taught or coached thousands of others. Along the way I have seen the change in society and the softness setting in. Not giving discipline to your child or teenager will set them up for a tough learning as a young adult.

  1. Discipline teaches kids/teengars about the consequences of bad decisions.
  2. Discipline gives kids/teenagers a solid base by which they can handle the stress and anxiety of adult life.
  3. Discilpine teaches responsibility for actions.
  4. Discipline helps your children become more successful as adults.
  5. God expects us to be disciplined and we should do the same for our kids.

Proverbs 22:15; Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him.

Proverbs 29:17; Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart.

Proverbs 10:17; Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life, but he who rejects reproof leads others astray.
