Lessons from Nicodemus: Embracing Fresh Starts

The Secret Encounter: What Nicodemus Can Teach Us About Fresh Starts

In the quiet of the night, a man named Nicodemus made his way through the shadows of Jerusalem. As a Pharisee and a member of the Sanhedrin, he had a reputation to uphold. He was a man of the law, a scholar of the scriptures, and a pillar of his community. Yet, something drew him to Jesus—an undercurrent of truth he couldn’t ignore.

Their conversation, recorded in John 3:1–20, is perhaps one of the most transformative dialogues in history. If you’ve ever felt like your life needs a “reset” or wondered if you are truly connected to God, this nighttime meeting holds the blueprint for your journey.

The Problem with “Trying Harder”

Nicodemus arrived expecting a debate about theology. Instead, Jesus gave him a challenge about identity.

“Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again,” Jesus told him.

Nicodemus was confused. How could someone be born a second time? He was thinking in terms of physical reality and human effort. He thought that if he followed the rules strictly enough, he would be “in.” But Jesus was introducing a revolutionary concept: You cannot improve your way into the Kingdom of God; you have to be changed from the inside out.

We often live like Nicodemus. We try to be better people, follow the right steps, and check off the right boxes to feel “right” with God. But Jesus reminds us that the spiritual life isn’t about self-improvement—it’s about a spiritual rebirth.

The Power of the “Must”

In verse 7, Jesus says, “You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’”

Why the word must? Because our human nature is limited. We are prone to selfishness, fear, and error. To see things from God’s perspective, to have the eyes to see His kingdom moving in the world, we need a new vantage point. We need the Spirit of God breathing life into our own spirits. It’s not something we achieve; it’s something we receive.

The World’s Most Famous Promise

As the conversation unfolds, Jesus reveals the heart of the Father. This leads to the most well-known verse in the Bible, John 3:16:

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

It is easy to glaze over these words because we’ve heard them so often, but stop and consider the magnitude of what Jesus is saying.

  • The Motive: Love. Not judgment, not a desire to punish, but a deep, sacrificial love for a world that had wandered far away.
  • The Cost: He gave His Son.
  • The Invitation: Whoever believes.

Stepping Out of the Shadows

The passage concludes with a sobering thought: “Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil” (John 3:19).

Nicodemus came to Jesus in the dark, likely because he was afraid of what others would think. But Jesus was inviting him—and invites us—to step into the light.

Stepping into the light can be intimidating. It means letting go of the habits, the pride, and the self-reliance that we hide in the shadows. But the light isn’t there to expose us just to shame us; it’s there to expose us so that we can be healed.

A Challenge for Today

Are you living your life through your own efforts, trying to “earn” your way toward peace? Or are you ready to be born again—to let God do a work in you that you could never do on your own?

You don’t have to wait for the cover of night to talk to Jesus. You can meet Him right where you are. Just as He turned the life of a rigid Pharisee upside down, He is waiting to offer you that same fresh start.

The invitation is open. Will you step into the light?
