The Locker Room of Life: Why the Ultimate Victory Isn’t Found on the Scoreboard
As a career coach in football, wrestling, and softball, I’ve spent decades living within the margins of victory and defeat. I’ve lived, breathed, and obsessively studied the W’s and L’s.
In the world of athletics, we quantify success in a very specific way. We look at the stats: Did my football team execute the play? Is my wrestler dominating on the mat? Are we putting points on the board? I’ve known Hall of Fame coaches whose win totals are legendary—numbers I’ve aspired to reach my entire career. They are defined by those stats, and there is certainly value in the pursuit of competitive excellence.
But after years of standing on sidelines and wrestling mats, I’ve realized that there is a much deeper way to define “winning.” It’s a perspective that moves beyond the final buzzer and into the life that happens long after the lights go out.
Winning at Life: The Coaching Mentality
My job as a coach isn’t just to manufacture athletes; it’s to mentor future adults. I want my students to leave my program as hardworking, goal-oriented, and resilient individuals.
I want them to learn that competition is a laboratory for life. It’s where they learn how to handle the sting of a hard loss and the discipline required to secure a big win. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to coach a several state champions—those rare, elite athletes who reach the pinnacle of their sport. But for me, the true “win” is watching those same individuals years later, succeeding in their careers, thriving in their marriages, and navigating the complexities of adulthood with the grit they learned on the field.
The Ultimate Coach
If we look at life as a game, we realize we aren’t playing alone. God is the ultimate Coach. He pushes us, mentors us, and teaches us how to be truly productive in every sense of the word.
He doesn’t just care about our stats; He cares about our souls. He wants us to be productive Christians, pursuing His guidance to build a life of purpose and lasting success. When we align our game plan with His Word, we set ourselves up for the ultimate victory: a life lived in His grace and the assurance of what comes after.
God is the most consistent teammate you will ever have. He walks with us through our victories, but more importantly, He carries us through our losses. He thinks of us above all else, always cheering for our growth and our salvation.
Being Coachable- I have to ask myself this everyday also. Am I being coachable by God? Am I opening myself up to the mentorship he provides us in the Bible and in daily life. Am I allowing him to push me to be a better husband, dad, brother, son, coach, teacher, mentor, friend and most importantly; a Christian.
So, I have to ask you: How do you try to win at life, and how do you seek to win with God?
Winning isn’t about being perfect; it’s about being coachable. Are you willing to put in the work to overcome your losses? Are you willing to lace up your cleats and get back on the field after a defeat, after a toss situation at home or work, knowing that your growth is more important than your momentary failure? Are you working to win by doing it the right way and in a manner that glorifies God.
Even more importantly, are you coachable by God? Will you allow His Spirit to guide your steps, refine your character, and lead you toward the afterlife success that transcends any trophy or championship ring? Those rings sit tucked away in a safe or jewelry box while our souls need to be tucked away in the book of life when our bodies fail and we see the Lord for judgement.
As it says in Proverbs 21:31:
“The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the LORD.”
We must do our part—we must prepare, train, and work hard—but we must trust that the ultimate outcome is in God’s hands.
A Prayer for the Journey
If you want to start winning in the way that matters most, start by inviting the Ultimate Coach into your daily game plan:
Dear Lord, please come into my life and allow me to be coached by You. Show me Your wisdom, grace, and mercy all the days of my life. Show me, through every winning and losing season of life, that I can always look to You for motivation, consistency, and peace. Amen.
God Bless!
