The air in the wrestling room hangs heavy with the scent of ambition, sweat, and a gritty determination. Here, on the mat, there’s a deliberate art to break down. I push them until their muscles scream, until their lungs burn, until every move feels like an impossible feat. We lift, we run, we drill, we stretch – not to inflict pain, but to strip away the weak points, the doubts, the conditioning that holds them back. This tearing down is a sacred trust, a calculated dismantling, all so they can be built back stronger, faster, tougher. Every bead of sweat, every gasp for air, is an investment in the formidable athlete they are destined to become – ready to battle, compete, and win. As a coach, I carry a blueprint, a strategy for every practice, every match, every season. To not plan is to invite defeat; “failure to plan is planning to fail.”
And as I reflect on this process, I see the profound echo of a grander design, a divine strategy at work in our lives. God, our ultimate Coach, employs a similar, deeply loving method. He has an ultimate plan for us, not just for a season, but for eternity: salvation and a life in Heaven with Him. While we are here, His plan encompasses our success, our transformation into servant-hearted individuals, helping and uplifting those around us.
Our spiritual walk is a continuous training session under His guidance. He “works us out,” allowing life’s “drills” and “live events” to challenge us, to expose our spiritual weak spots, to break down the barriers we’ve unknowingly erected between ourselves and His full presence. Just as my wrestlers must endure rigorous training to achieve peak physical condition, we must commit to hard work in our faith – consistent prayer, diligent study of His Word, and a willingness to be stripped bare of pride, fear, and self-reliance. This divine tearing down is not punitive; it’s preparatory. It’s the sacred process of rebuilding, making us stronger, more resilient in faith, and better equipped to serve.
These “small increments” of growth, these daily victories over our old selves, are seen and celebrated by our heavenly Coach. He pushes us to refine our character, to deepen our understanding, to develop as better humans, and ultimately, to shine as a light reflecting His glory to a world in need.
This intense self-reflection led me to pose some crucial questions, not just for my athletes, but for myself as both a coach and a Christian:
- Am I doing what I need to do every day to tear down the old self, so that the new self can be built back up?
- Am I truly being the person I am called to be in God’s eyes, aligning my actions with His purpose?
- Am I willing to put myself out there, to risk ridicule, personal attacks, and even persecution for the beliefs I hold dear?
I’ve affixed these questions to my daily view, a constant reminder to examine my goals, not only on the mat but, more importantly, in my walk with Christ. What daily improvements can I make to fully embrace this process of being “Torn Down and Built Back Up”?
For, as it says in Corinthians 2:9-10: “No eye has seen, nor ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.” But, it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets.
Lord, help me to actively seek You by tearing myself down – shedding my imperfections, my doubts, my old ways – and diligently building back up with small, faithful improvements every single day. Help me to become a better husband, father, brother, coach, mentor, teacher, and above all, a devout Christian. Amen, Amen, and Amen.
