In our lives, we have all traveled down many winding roads. Some paths are paved, perfectly smooth, and stretch out before us in a predictable, straight line. These are the roads of comfort—the seasons of life where everything feels settled, planned, and secure. Then, there are the others: the dirt roads, the rocky paths, the steep hills, and the sharp, hairpin curves. These roads are often exciting and invigorating, but they can just as easily leave us feeling nervous, uncertain of exactly where we will end up, or anxious about how long it might take to reach our destination.

For my wife, Cindy, and me, the mountains of Western North Carolina have become the backdrop of our lives. We have spent years navigating these winding roads, finding solace in the scenery and clarity in the silence. Among all the routes we’ve explored, the Blue Ridge Parkway remains our favorite. It is more than just a road; it is a beautiful, winding experience that offers breathtaking views and nature at its absolute finest. When you are on the Parkway, the world seems to slow down, and your mind, body, and soul finally find a rhythm that feels like peace.

The Beauty of the Unplanned Path

Every October, Cindy and I make the pilgrimage up to the mountains. It’s a tradition born of a love for the changing foliage, the crisp autumn air, and the pursuit of hidden waterfalls. We have our favorite spots, like Price Park, where the stillness of nature seems to echo the stillness of the heart.

This past October, however, we decided to take a different route back down the mountain: Highway 221. Anyone who has driven this stretch knows it is a wild, curvy adventure. But in that detour, we found something new. We discovered hidden waterfalls we’d never seen before, unique rock formations that spoke of history, and the perfect spots to capture updated family pictures.

There is something deeply cleansing about traveling those windy roads. It brings us back to nature, back to our roots, and back to a sense of divine enlightenment. It reminded me that even when we deviate from our “usual” path, there is hidden beauty to be found if we are willing to embrace the curves.

When Cindy and I met nearly thirty years ago, we took a trip to these very mountains. I remember standing there, looking out across God’s landscape, sharing the wonder of the horizon with the woman who would become my partner for life.

I have titled this reflection “Traveling the Windy Roads with God” because, looking back, I realize He has been with us at every turn. Just as Cindy and I have nurtured and loved each other to develop our relationship, God has been doing the same for us.

Life is rarely a straight line. We hit crossroads where we have to guess which way to go. Sometimes, we take a wrong turn, ending up at a dead end or in a place we never intended to be. But God is the ultimate navigator. He travels these roads of life with us, ensuring that even when the path is rough, dusty, or dangerously curvy, we are never truly lost.

He acts as our compass in the moments of uncertainty. When we feel overwhelmed by the “bumpy and hilly” patches of existence, He is there to provide the traction we need to keep moving forward.

Finding Purpose in the Uncertainty

Our journey in life often comes with uncertainty. We don’t always know what lies around the next bend, but we can rest in the knowledge that God knows the final destination and our ultimate purpose. Even when we feel like we are wandering, God’s guidance is actively shaping our trajectory.
