Are you a leader or a follower?

Daily writing prompt
Are you a leader or a follower?

I hae always told my student athletes that in life you have sheep and you have shepards. Sheep hang in the masses, try to blend in and get along with everyone and are part of the bigger crowd. Shepards are the leaders of these sheep. Leadership does not come naturally and is a learned art. Effective leadership is required in life to make sure that things are moving along. Many sheeple are envious of those that are in leadership roles and often hate on them. How many people bitch and moan about their boss? Bitch and moan about the leaders in politics? Bitch and moan about their teachers, parents and coaches.

The world needs both sheep and shepards. The sheep need leadership, guidance and protection at times. The Shepard provides that protection. I relate this to my relationship with God and the Bible. God is the Great Sheppard and we are his flock of sheep. He guides, leads and protects us and we should seek his guidance, grace and mercy. I ask my students, “Are you a sheep or a shepard”?

It is up to us to be one or the other or a combination of both. We all have the ability to be leaders and it takes time, patience, work and energy to build those skills. If you want people to follow you then work at it and not bitch about being a sheep. Get out of your comfort zone, make a bigger difference and be a Sheppard.

1st Timothy; Chapter 3, Verse 1-3

The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well

  1. You just have to remember that the next shepherd is going to come from the flock. My biggest problem was learning that not every up-and-coming leader would lead like I do, different strengths and styles.
