Unlocking Intuition: Explore the Four Clairs

Beyond the Five Senses: Understanding the Four “Clairs”

We often think of intuition as a mysterious “gut feeling”—a vague hunch that nudges us in the right direction. But for many, intuition is far more specific and sensory. Whether you’ve ever had a vivid dream that came true, heard a sudden whisper of advice, or simply “just known” something without any evidence, you are likely tapping into what are known as the Four Clairs.

The “Clairs” (from the French word for “clear”) are different channels through which your intuitive wisdom speaks. While most people have a dominant channel, we all have the capacity to strengthen each one.

Here is a breakdown of the four primary ways intuition shows up—and how you might be experiencing them in your daily life.

1. Clairvoyance: The Clear Seeing

Clairvoyance is the ability to receive intuitive information through internal or external visuals. It doesn’t always mean seeing ghosts or predicting the future like a movie screen (though it can!). It can be as simple as closing your eyes and seeing random people, shapes, symbols or things.

How it feels:

Mental images: You might see symbols, colors, or scenes flash through your mind’s eye.

Vivid dreams: You often have dreams that feel more real than reality or contain symbolic messages.

Daydreaming: You find that when you focus on a problem, you get a “mental snapshot” of the solution.

Visual patterns: You notice repeating numbers, symbols, or specific imagery in nature that seems to “speak” to you.

2. Clairaudience: The Clear Hearing

Clairaudience is receiving intuitive information through sounds. This isn’t always a literal voice talking in your ear; often, it manifests as a thought that sounds distinctly different from your own internal monologue. At times ringing in the ear can be thought of as this gift.

How it feels:

Inner whispers: You hear a sudden word, phrase, or piece of advice in your mind.

Songs on repeat: You find yourself hearing a specific song snippet that contains the exact answer to a question you’ve been pondering.

Sensitivity to sound: You might be hyper-aware of the tone in someone’s voice—hearing the hidden emotion behind their words.

The “External” Sound: You might hear a ringing in your ears or a sound that draws your attention during a moment of decision.

3. Clairsentience: The Clear Feeling

This is perhaps the most common form of intuition. Clairsentience is about experiencing information through emotions, physical sensations, or energetic shifts. In this one, it is actually touch to me. I feel the energy around my head, face and the nerves in my upper neck area.

How it feels:

The “Gut” reaction: You walk into a room and immediately feel heavy, anxious, or inexplicably uplifted based on the vibe of the people there.

Physical symptoms: You get a tight knot in your stomach or a sudden “goosebump” sensation when you are around someone who might not be telling the truth. This can often be feeling what the deceased is trying to tell you. You may feel their pain, lose your breath, have trouble breathing, chest pressure, arm or leg pain associated with spirits.

Empathy: You feel the emotions of others as if they were your own.

Tactile sensations: You might feel a tingle on your skin or a change in temperature when you reach a conclusion or make a choice.

4. Claircognizance: The Clear Knowing

Claircognizance is the most “intellectual” of the clairs. It’s the abrupt, undeniable download of information. There is no visual, no sound, and no physical sensation—just a sudden, absolute certainty. This is the hardest to decipher. I have helped people with things and somehow I just know. I cannot explain it, where it actually comes from, but “I just know”. This is the amazing gift that many want but do not know how to decipher or use.

How it feels:

“I just know”: You have an answer to a complex problem, but you have no idea how you arrived at it.

Sudden ideas: You get an inspiration for a project or a life change that feels complete and ready to execute.

Lack of doubt: When you receive this information, you don’t feel the need to “check your sources.” You simply carry the truth of it within you.

The “Aha!” Moment: It’s that flash of clarity where the puzzle pieces of your life suddenly snap into place.

How to Identify Your Primary “Clair”

If you’re wondering which one is yours, think back to the last time you made a big decision. Some people are gifted with one or all of them. Some have none or have never unlocked their intuitive abilities. Some are afraid of it. Some do not believe in it. Some are told they are different or weird if they can do it.

Did you see the outcome in your mind?

Did you hear a voice telling you what to do?

Did your body react with a sense of relief or tension?

Or did you simply know the answer without any extra fanfare?

None of the Clairs are “better” than the others—they are simply the unique language of your intuition. The more you pay attention to how your inner guidance chooses to communicate, the louder and clearer that voice will become. Practice your inner self. Stay away from negative people (they drain you). Take time to rest and recover after being around many people or at a big event. Learn to block these feelings, signs and meanings at times. Be careful chasing it as you can be deceived by spirits with bad intentions. Not many can decipher between good and evil intentions of spirit guides, ghosts and spiritual energy.
