Leadership: Are You a Shepherd or a Sheep?

Daily writing prompt
Are you a leader or a follower?

I have written extensively on leadership on this blog and others. Today I will write about some Biblical principal’s of leadership and following. Growing up I was always told that there are two types of people, leaders and followers. I have always referred to that as Shepherd or Sheep. A Shepard is strong, tough and always watching out for his sheep. A sheep follows the others around, even if they are walking into a dangerous situation.

I ask my athletes and students, are you a Shepard or a sheep? I want leaders that will take charge. I want leaders that will get after it. I want leaders that will show the way forward. I want leaders that will sacrifice themselves for the good of the others. I want leaders that hold themselves accountable and those around them.

Sheep follow the flock. Sheep walk around and mingle amongst the others. Sheep have to be protected by someone. Sheep are jittery, scared and like to be among peers. Sheep do as they are led to do. Sheep often get led to the slaughter unfortunately. There are wolves in the world and they will dress as sheep and sit in wait to pounce. These I call Wolves in Sheeps clothing. We have some leaders right now in America politics that are these wolves.

They lead the sheeps and dwell among them as if to fit in. Then when the timing is right, they throw off the wolves clothing and pounce. Every election is like that to me. The wolves tell the sheep what to do and then once they comply they pounce. But wolves do not protect, they eat, kill, injure or disregard the lowly sheep once done with them.

That is why you need to be a Shepard and be a leader that protects, loves, supports, and drives your sheep to safety and security. Not with broken promises or beating them down. But by being an active participant in the lives of those sheep. Sheep dogs are leaders. Wolves are killers. Shepards protect the flock as God does. God shows the ultimate leadership skills. He is kind, ever present, loving, encouraging, supportive, tough at times, soft at times, and was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice so his sheep can be managed one day in the great flock in heaven.

Are you a Shepard or a Sheep? Are you a leader or a follower? Are you a Sheep Dog or a Wolf? We all have these inside of us and the choices we make will show what we are. We have to have sheep and that is OK. But with that, we have to have Shepards to guide and protect the Sheep. God is the greatest Shepard and his son Jesus is the best Sheep Dog ever on earth. Both are there all the time, eyes wide open to keep the Wolf’s away. I encourage you to do some self reflection on leadership and following. I encourage you to read the Bible and see what it has to say about both Sheep and Shepard’s.

God Bless and go live your best life!
