Random Stranger encounter changed his life

Daily writing prompt
Describe a random encounter with a stranger that stuck out positively to you.

I have had many encounters with strangers that were very positive and like most people a few negative encounters as well. The story I am writing today comes from an experience my good friend had when in college. His name was Jon and he was studying to be a preacher taking the classes for Divinity and that was his goal. Jon was a typical college age guy with the exception that he did not drink alcohol, do drugs or have sex with girls. He had a beautiful girlfriend that was a cheerleader for our football team and she was a sweet heart. They dated for a few months and as the relationship grew deeper and deeper towards love. I will call her Jill for writing purposes.

Jill decided that she wanted to have sex with Jon and asked him about it. He told here where he stood and she got mad at him playing the “what am I not pretty enough or good enough card” to pressure him into it. Jon held his ground for another month and they started to drift apart. She wanted sex and he did too, but he had a conviction in his heart to wait until he was married. The relationship became really strained and Jill was mad a lot and putting pressure on him by throwing herself at him and trying to do things to excite him. Jon was struggling and told me that he didn’t know if he could hold out. She was very attractive and experienced in that area and he was a 6’2 255 pound well built offensive lineman and she wanted some of that action.

Jon told me he was going to take a trip home for a weekend and then when he got back to school, he would take Jill to a favorite spot on the river where lots of students went to swim, screw and drink. He had decided to go ahead and do it because he still loved her and wanted to not lose her over sex. This is where the power of a strange encounter comes into play. Actually it is the power of God’s grace, mercy and leadership in our life that came into play. As he was driving down highway 421 from Boone, NC towards Wilkesboro he passed a long haired raggedy looking man on the side of the road. He felt like he was supposed to stop and pick the guy up but kept driving.

He want on down the mountain and about two miles down the same guy was on the side of the road hitch hiking. Jon couldn’t believe what he was seeing so he stopped to ask if the guy was ok. The man said, I am fine Jon and asked for a ride. Jon was taken off guard because the man said “I am fine Jon”. You see Jon had not told the guy his name in the first minute or so of talking. The stranger said his name was Joshua and got into the car. Jon asked him where he was going and the man said wherever you are going I am always there. Jon, confused said what do you mean you are always with me? The stranger said, stop the car and he opened the door and got out.

The strange man, Joshua walked around to the drivers side and Jon rolled his truck window down. The man then said, “remember, I am always with you son”. His eyes changed color to a beautiful blue like the sky and he grabbed a ragged cross from around his neck that hung on an old piece of leather. The man put the cross in Jon’s hand and said to Jon. “Do what the Lord wants and not of the earthly realm wants” and your blessings will be tenfold in the flock. Jon still dazed and confused thanked the man and drove off. He looked back in his mirror and the stranger Joshua had began walking back up the mountain. He looked down at the cross as a tear came to his eyes realizing the stranger was an Angel sent to protect and guide him.

Jon looked back up and the man was gone. He pulled over, cried like a baby and Thanked God. Jon and Jill ended up breaking up a few weeks later as he held to his conviction and knew that God had said to do as he wants, not what the earthly realm wants. Jill moved on to another football player that had his way with her and then another and another. Jill was a sex addict and not what Jon wanted or needed. Several years later with his Divinity degree and placement in a nice small town Baptist Church. Jon met the woman of his dreams and they dated, married and she too had saved herself for marriage. They now have three grown children, a couple of grandkids and he is soon to retire after 35 years serving God and his flock in the Baptist Church.

This is the story as it happened and i want you all to know that God has a heavenly plan for you to follow. Steer clear of the earthly one and let God lead and guide you and your reward will be tenfold.
