Freddy Fish and the Gloomy Grouper: A Tale of Friendship

In Coral Creek, a bubbly place, Lived Freddy Fish, with a smiling face. His scales were gems of blue and green, The friendliest fish you’ve ever seen.

He’d greet the clams with a cheerful wink, And help the snails who’d start to sink. He’d tell a joke to the seahorse herd, And hang on every crabby word. “Good morning, friends!” he’d always call, He spread his kindness to them all.

But one dark day, a shadow fell Across the creek, from a rocky cell. A brand new fish had moved right in, With jagged teeth and a spiky fin. His name was Grumbles, a gloomy Grouper, And frankly, not a happy trooper.

He’d scowl and glower, sigh and groan, And wished to be left all alone. The other fish would swim and hide, Whenever Grumbles swam outside. They’d whisper low, “Oh, stay away! He’ll chase the fun right out of day!”

But Freddy, with his friendly heart, Thought, “This just isn’t very smart. Perhaps he’s lonely, lost, or sad, A fish that grumpy can’t be bad.” So Freddy hatched a clever plan, As only friendly Freddy can.

He found a pearl, a milky sphere, And pushed it with his front fin, near The gloomy cave where Grumbles stayed, And wasn’t one bit scared or swayed. He saw the Grouper, big and grim, Looming in the shadows dim.

“Hello!” chirped Freddy, bright and bold. “I brought a gift for you to hold! The creek is sunny, warm, and grand, The finest place in all the land!” Grumbles stared with one big eye, And let a mournful, rumbling sigh.

“Why are you here?” the Grouper spoke, His gravelly voice a weary croak. “Can’t you see I want to be A lonely grump beneath the sea?” “I see a fish,” said Freddy sweet, “Who I would really like to meet.”

The Grouper blinked, his frown gave way, He didn’t know just what to say. No one had ever been so kind, Or tried to see what was on his mind. A little smile began to form, Like sunshine breaking through a storm.

“It’s just,” said Grumbles, “I’m not cool. I never learned the friendship rule. I don’t know how to laugh and play, So I just scare everyone away.” Freddy grinned. “Well that’s just fine! You can be a friend of mine!”

He took his fin and showed him how To give a friendly little bow. He taught him games of seaweed tag, And how to wave a bubbly flag. Soon Grumbles laughed, a rumbling sound, That shook the happy sea-floor ground.

And from that day, the creek could see A Grouper, happy as could be, Swimming right by Freddy’s side, With nothing left to sulk or hide. For a simple word, a friendly deed, Had planted a most wondrous seed.
