Leadership Lessons from the Bible

Today I am continuing a short series of blog posts about Leadership. In this writing I will be discussing the 5 five E’s of a great leader. Everyone has a different opinion of what a great leader is. I have worked for some fabulous leaders and some that were not very good. Leadership is a developed skill that takes lots of time, energy, patience and time to build. Leadership is mentioned in the Bible in numerous places. Here are the five basic E’s of a great leader.

Envision: Leaders set a clear vision for the future, establishing goals and strategies that motivate and direct the organization.

Engage: Leaders build strong relationships with their team, fostering a sense of trust and collaboration.

Energize: Leaders inspire and empower their team, creating a positive and motivating work environment.

Enable: Leaders provide the resources, support, and tools necessary for their team to succeed.

Execute: Leaders ensure that plans are effectively implemented and that goals are achieved.

Now let’s look at the word of God and see what he has to say about being a good leader. Philippians 2:3 states; Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. This is telling us as leaders that we have to put others above us. We have to be willing to lead with ambition, but not be cocky or think we are that we are better than those we lead. I have worked with people that thought their “stuff” did not stink, but believe me it did. They thought they were all that, but were not. On the other hand, I have worked with several that are of a servant heart and they tend to be the best people to work for.

Acts 20:28, states that we should pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood. A great leader oversees their “flock” or workers, employees in a manner that is protective, caring and supportive. A leader that will take an arrow for their people is my kind of leader. As a career teacher I have dealt with many parents phone calls and emails where they are coming at me over grades, attendance or discipline which they should be overseeing. I talked to my Principal and he said, “just give me a heads up about the kid, parent and situation and I will proudly take that arrow or shot from the parent for you”.

1st Peter 5:3; states that leaders should not be domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. A great leader is not so demanding of things they are not willing to do or have done. Great leaders have proven that they are capable and have done those things that they are demanding of. Great leaders hold themselves and others accountable for success and failure. Psalm 37:5 says that we should commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. To be a great leader we have to commit to work, our morals, our family, our future and our present.

Everyday as a teacher, coach and mentor to teenagers and my peers. I pray that God give me the strength and guidance to be a better husband, father, brother, teacher, coach and mentor. Most importantly a better man of God that represents his family and community with dignity, grace and a positive spirit. Lord I pray for those reading this word and hope it put them in a mannerism to become the best leaders they can in their family, profession and community. You do not have to have an official title, make huge money or be in charge of people to be a great leader of people.

Parents lead your children to the light and away from the darkness. Hold yourself and them accountable for actions, reactions, and daily decisions. Do what you must to bring honor to your family and self.

God Bless!
