This is a big question and one that I have thought about many times. My community like many is small and tight knit. It is not a big town, but big enough to have the things and places needed (about 25,000) people. As for the things I would change there is a long list. Below are the top priorities that I feel impact the community the most and changing or getting rid of these things would strengthen the community as a whole and make it a better place for all to live.
- Poverty Levels: I wish there was a magic way to decrease poverty for the struggling families in the community. Most of it is by choice as people have made the choice to not pursue higher education, training and knowledge to empower themselves to make a change. Most are choosing to stay barely above water and survive. I would offer more training, knowledge and jobs that could grow the community and give those people a better chance at life. I still believe most may need some accountability to move forward and not rely on federal, state and city services and money from taxes that supports them.
- Drugs: Drugs are bad in certain areas of town and destroy families and individual lives. I would make the penalty for selling, using and pushing dope worse than it is. I believe these people have no respect for other humans and are peddling potential death everytime they make a drug deal. People stuck on drugs need support and help. But they also need accountability for continuing to use. Repeat offenders need to have more severe consequences. Too many children are left alone due to drugs. Children starve because the parents spend money on dope. This has to stop and a hard core approach would be taken to reduce it.
- Economic Development: The town I live in was once a thriving furniture and manufacturing town. Thousands of jobs were done daily in several local plants that now sit unactive, falling apart or are occupied by homeless people. I would promote the local town, offer incentives to reconstruct those buildings, offer grants, and opportunity loans to make these places apartments, stores, business and places to eat.
-Schools: The local school system is failing the kids on a daily basis. Too many children are allowed to disrupt class, fight, misbehave and just generally not do what they need to do. I would get rid of cell phones in schools (yes, ban them) from use during the day. I know this may draw some comments but being real as an educator. I see it daily. Kids need to be reading, writing, calculating, math, drawing, speaking, exercising and other life skills development. They don not need tiktok and all those other apps during the day. Social media and every student having a laptop is a curse in my opinion on education.
- Parental Involvement: Parental involvement is at an all time low. We have students at school that have never had a parent attend a ball game, PTO, parent night, fund raisers, football games, basketball games and other activity. They are too busy doing other stuff or laying at home doing nothing. It is sad and the kids pay the price. Coaches and teachers should not have to take kids home from practice when there are two parents and two cars. I drop a kid off and mom/dad are sitting on their ass on the porch smoking dope or partying. Schools are going down because parents are not parenting their kids.
