We live in the country in North Carolina on 13.5 acres. 5.5 of that is a nice thick woods with a creek and pond. This attracts lots of critters, animals and such as it is a perfect place to hide, bed down at night and find food. We have seen deer, coyote, possums, racoons, bobcats, rabbits, and many other animals. Occasionally we have a snake as well in the yard. We have five dogs and they do a really good job of keeping the critters away from the house. They will kill any smaller animals that are rooting in the yard such as moles and mice. Unfortunately, they like to roll around in those remains which stinks them up. My neighbor also has cows, pigs and goats so we live basically on a farm. We have several species of wild birds including Owls, Eagles, Hawks and Turkey Buzzards.
We have to watch the small dogs because those large birds of prey can take them away with one swoop. They will sit on the tall pine trees and watch for small animals and then go after them. When we grow our fields up for cutting hay three times a year the big birds come in by the dozens once that grass is cut down as it reveals lots of small critters moles, rats, rabbits, etc for them to snack on. Nature takes care of itself and we leave it alone and do not bother it. I love sitting on the porch and looking out and seeing a herd of deer crossing the yard or several wild turkeys gobbling off in the distance. We have thousands of Chimney Sweeps which are a small black bird that likes to stay in the taller trees and in groups of hundreds to thousands. They fly over and let you know they are in the area.
We have two blue jays that love to dive bomb the bigger birds (crows and hawks) as well as the dogs when they are in the yard. They sing all day long and work the trees, grass and bushes for food. We also have two awesome cardinals which are so bright red and appear to be a mated pair. They are my favorite birds and just sit and watch things happen and occasionally fly across the property to the woods for refuge when the blue jays are around. My dad was a bird watcher and loved to sit and watch them, especially the humming birds which we have several of also. You can sit on the porch and hear bugs, frogs, crickets, and animals making noises and it is very relaxing. Come join me on the front porch and lets chill over a hot cup of coffee or cold glass of tea and enjoy the animals.
